Why Your Annual Eye Exam is Important

Can you remember when you had your last eye exam?  Periodic eye examinations may be your most important preventive health care exam.  Many sight threatening eye diseases, such as glaucoma and macular degeneration, show no obvious signs or symptoms in the early stages.  The AARP association reports that 38 million Americans over the age of 40 have glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration or cataracts.  Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are important to prevent vision loss.

So even if you are not having problems with your vision, regular scheduled eye exams are valuable and should be scheduled at least once every year.  And remember a comprehensive eye exam involves evaluation of all of your eye’s anatomical and functional structures, and in many cases your pupil will be dilated with drops so your doctor can visualize the back of the eye.
